Window reveals are often the coldest surfaces in a room, which is why they collect moisture first. This article sets out the practical points we most often discuss with customers, and where a physical inspection is needed before drawing conclusions.
What to look for
Pattern, height, timing and location all carry information. Damp that varies with rainfall points outwards to the building envelope; damp that varies with temperature and occupancy usually points towards condensation; damp confined to the base of a wall may be rising damp, bridging or a leak. Record where and when the problem appears before assuming a cause.
Common contributing factors
Defective gutters and downpipes, raised external ground levels, bridged damp-proof courses, failed pointing or render, plumbing leaks, insufficient extract ventilation and cold surfaces are all regular contributors. More than one factor is often involved.
What this cannot establish
General guidance cannot confirm the cause in a specific property. Meter readings, salt contamination, wall construction and hidden defects all need assessing on site before remedial work is specified.

Clear and check rainwater goods, confirm extract fans are working, avoid blocking air bricks, and record photographs of the affected area over time. If the problem persists or is worsening, arrange an inspection so recommendations can be based on evidence.
