Leighton Buzzard sits in Bedfordshire between the Chiltern escarpment to the south-west and the flatter Vale of Aylesbury beyond. The town has grown considerably over the decades, and that growth has produced a wide variety of housing stock within a relatively compact area. Older streets closer to the town centre contain Victorian and Edwardian terraced houses built with solid brick walls and no cavity. These properties have original lime-based mortar and plaster that was designed to breathe, and when modern cement repointing or impermeable paint is applied, moisture that would otherwise evaporate becomes trapped inside the wall, leading to persistent damp that is often misread as rising damp.
