Different construction types behave differently when they get wet, so the approach is matched to the building in front of us.
Shefford sits in the valley of the River Ivel in central Bedfordshire, a short distance from Biggleswade to the north-east and Arlesey to the east. The town has a mixed housing stock that reflects several distinct periods of construction. Older properties close to the town centre include Victorian and Edwardian terraces built with solid brick walls and no original damp-proof course, or with a slate or engineering-brick course that has deteriorated over a century or more of use. The two can produce similar surface staining but have different causes and different solutions. Rising damp typically appears at low level, follows a tide-mark pattern, often carries white salts and is associated with a failed or bridged damp-proof course.
