Baldock is one of the older market towns in Hertfordshire, and its housing stock reflects that age clearly. The town centre and streets radiating from it contain a good number of Victorian and Edwardian terraced properties, many built with solid brick walls and no cavity. Solid-wall construction of this era has no built-in means of resisting wind-driven rain in the same way a modern cavity wall does, and the original lime-based mortars and renders, while breathable, deteriorate over time. Where repointing or rendering has been done in hard cement, moisture can become trapped within the wall rather than evaporating, and damp patches on internal surfaces often follow.
Interwar semi-detached and detached housing makes up a significant part of the residential streets in and around Baldock.
