Berkhamsted sits in the Bulbourne valley in the Chiltern hills, and the town's housing reflects several distinct construction eras. The older core contains Victorian and Edwardian terraced and semi-detached properties, many built from local brick with solid walls and no cavity. In solid-wall construction there is no air gap to interrupt the passage of moisture, so failed or bridged original damp-proof courses allow ground moisture to migrate upward through the masonry. Repointing with modern cement mortars, rather than the softer lime originally used, can trap rather than release moisture, pushing damp into the interior face of a wall where it eventually becomes visible as staining or salting.
