Ramsey sits in the low-lying fenland of Cambridgeshire, a landscape that was largely drained over several centuries and remains characterised by flat, moisture-retentive ground. The town's older housing stock includes Victorian and Edwardian terraced properties built with solid brick walls and no effective damp-proof course, or with a slate or engineering-brick course that has since cracked or become bridged by raised ground levels, rendering or accumulated debris. In these properties, rising damp is a genuine mechanism worth investigating carefully. It produces tide-marked, salt-contaminated plaster at low level and can lead to gradual timber decay in ground-floor joists and skirting boards if moisture ingress has continued unchecked for a number of years.
